Deepening Democracy through Access to Information

Telkom

Telkom is a South African telecommunications company that provides integrated communications services across the country. Headquartered in Centurion, Gauteng, the company operates as a publicly listed entity on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, with the South African government historically holding a significant stake. Telkom offers fixed-line and mobile voice services, data connectivity, broadband internet, IT solutions and network infrastructure to consumer, business and wholesale markets. The company's core infrastructure includes an extensive fibre-optic network and mobile operations under the Telkom Mobile brand. Openserve, a principal subsidiary, manages the wholesale fixed-line access network and fibre infrastructure, providing connectivity services to retail service providers and enterprise customers. Telkom has played a central role in South Africa's telecommunications landscape since its origins as a state-owned monopoly, and remains a major player despite increased competition from mobile operators and independent fibre providers. The company has undergone significant restructuring and commercialisation since the 1990s, transitioning from a parastatal to a partially privatised entity. Telkom's operations are critical to digital inclusion efforts and the expansion of broadband access across South Africa. The company employs thousands of people and continues to invest in network modernisation and the rollout of next-generation technologies.
