Statistics South Africa
Statistics South Africa is the national statistical service of South Africa, responsible for collecting, producing and disseminating official statistics for the country. The organisation operates as an independent entity within the public administration, reporting to Parliament through the Minister of Finance. Its mandate is established under the Statistics Act of 1999, which guarantees professional independence in the production and publication of official statistics. Statistics South Africa conducts a wide range of surveys and censuses covering demographic, economic, social and environmental data, including the national population census, labour force surveys, consumer price indices and gross domestic product calculations. The organisation provides data that informs government policy, business decisions and public debate across South Africa. It employs statisticians, economists, demographers and data specialists who apply international statistical standards and methodologies. Statistics South Africa publishes its findings through regular reports, databases and online platforms accessible to government, researchers, media and the public. The organisation was established in 1999 as the successor to the Central Statistical Service, with a reformed mandate to serve the democratic government and all South Africans with reliable, impartial statistical information.
