Spain
Spain is a country located in south-western Europe, occupying most of the Iberian Peninsula. The capital is Madrid, while Barcelona is the second-largest city and a major economic centre. Spain has a population of about 47-million and operates as a parliamentary constitutional monarchy. The economy is the fourth-largest in the eurozone and fourteenth-largest globally, with key sectors including tourism, manufacturing, agriculture and renewable energy. Spain is a significant producer of wind and solar power and has emerged as a strategic location for critical minerals development in Europe. The country uses the euro as its currency and is a member of the European Union, the eurozone, NATO and the United Nations. Spain's mineral resources include tin, tantalum, niobium, tungsten and lithium, with projects such as the Penouta mine in Galicia contributing to Europe's supply of energy transition minerals. The country has a diversified industrial base, with automotive manufacturing, aerospace and chemicals among its leading export sectors. Spain's geographic position gives it strong trade links with both Europe and North Africa, and its ports handle substantial volumes of goods moving between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic. The government has prioritised energy transition and the development of domestic critical mineral resources to reduce reliance on imports and support the European Union's green economy objectives.
