Polokwane
Polokwane is the capital city of Limpopo province in South Africa and serves as the administrative and economic hub of the province. The city has a population of approximately 130 000 within its municipal boundaries, with the greater metropolitan area home to more than 600 000 residents. Polokwane is situated in the north-eastern part of South Africa, roughly 300 km north of Johannesburg, and lies at an elevation of about 1 310 m above sea level. The city's economy is anchored by government administration, mining support services, agriculture, retail and light manufacturing. It is a key service centre for the surrounding platinum, chrome and coal mining districts, as well as for commercial farming operations producing citrus, vegetables and livestock. Polokwane is home to the University of Limpopo and serves as a transport and logistics node, with road and rail links connecting South Africa to Zimbabwe and Botswana. The city's infrastructure includes Polokwane International Airport, which handles domestic flights and occasional regional services. Polokwane was known as Pietersburg until 2005, when it was renamed to reflect the area's pre-colonial Sotho heritage. The city gained international attention in 2007 when it hosted the African National Congress's national conference, and in 2010 it was one of the host cities for the FIFA World Cup.
