Panyaza Lesufi
Panyaza Lesufi is a South African politician who serves as Premier of Gauteng province, having assumed office in October 2022. He is a member of the African National Congress (ANC) and chairs the party's Gauteng provincial executive committee. Before becoming premier, Lesufi held the position of Gauteng Education MEC from 2014 to 2022, where he became known for his outspoken approach to education policy and infrastructure development. He also served as Gauteng Finance MEC from May to October 2022 during a brief transitional period. Lesufi's tenure has been marked by his active engagement on social media and his willingness to confront controversial issues in provincial governance. As premier, he oversees the administration of South Africa's economic heartland, which includes Johannesburg and Pretoria and accounts for a significant share of national GDP. His leadership has involved navigating complex coalition politics, managing provincial finances, and addressing service delivery challenges in health, education and infrastructure. Lesufi has been a prominent voice within ANC internal debates and frequently features in coverage of Gauteng's governance, public finance management and political developments.
