Oil And Gas
Oil and gas is a major global industry encompassing the exploration, extraction, refining, transportation and marketing of crude oil and natural gas, two of the world's most important energy sources and industrial feedstocks. The sector is typically divided into upstream activities (exploration and production), midstream operations (transportation, storage and wholesale marketing) and downstream processes (refining, distribution and retail). Africa is home to significant hydrocarbon reserves, with major producing countries including Nigeria, Angola, Algeria, Libya, Egypt and emerging players such as Mozambique, Tanzania and Namibia. Oil and gas revenues are critical to the fiscal health of many African economies, funding government budgets, infrastructure development and social programmes, though dependence on hydrocarbon exports also exposes countries to commodity-price volatility and the resource curse. The industry attracts substantial foreign direct investment from international oil companies and national oil corporations, and is subject to complex regulatory frameworks, production-sharing agreements and transparency initiatives such as the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative. Environmental and climate considerations are reshaping the sector, with growing pressure to reduce carbon emissions, manage methane leakage and transition towards cleaner energy sources. Governance challenges, including corruption, contract opacity and community displacement, remain significant concerns in many African oil and gas jurisdictions. The sector's capital intensity, technical complexity and geopolitical significance ensure it remains a focal point of business coverage, policy debate and investment analysis across the continent.
