Mexico
Mexico is a federal republic in North America, bordered by the United States to the north, Guatemala and Belize to the south, the Pacific Ocean to the west and the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea to the east. Its capital is Mexico City, one of the world's largest metropolitan areas. With a population exceeding 128-million, Mexico is the tenth most populous country globally and the most populous Spanish-speaking nation. The economy is the fifteenth largest in the world by nominal GDP, characterised by a diverse industrial base spanning automotive manufacturing, electronics, petroleum extraction and refining, mining, agriculture and tourism. Mexico is a major exporter of vehicles, electronics, machinery, oil and agricultural products including avocados, tomatoes and berries. The currency is the Mexican peso. The country operates as a federal presidential republic comprising 31 states and Mexico City as a federal entity. Mexico is a founding member of the United Nations, a member of the World Trade Organisation, the International Monetary Fund, the G20 and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. It is party to the United States–Mexico–Canada Agreement, which replaced the North American Free Trade Agreement in 2020, cementing deep economic integration with its northern neighbours. Mexico is rich in mineral resources, including silver, copper, gold, zinc and lithium, positioning it as a significant player in global critical minerals supply chains. The nation gained independence from Spain in 1821 and has since developed into Latin America's second-largest economy.
