Kinshasa
Kinshasa is the capital and largest city of the Democratic Republic of Congo, located on the southern bank of the Congo river. With a population exceeding 15-million people, it ranks among Africa's most populous urban centres and serves as the country's political, economic and cultural hub. The city sits directly across the river from Brazzaville, the capital of the Republic of Congo, forming one of the world's closest pairs of capital cities. Kinshasa is the administrative heart of the DRC, housing the national government, Parliament and the offices of the President. Its economy is driven by commerce, services, manufacturing and the informal sector, with the port of Matadi downstream serving as a key gateway for imports and exports. The city is a major centre for telecommunications, banking and media in Central Africa. Infrastructure challenges including power supply, road networks and water services remain significant, though investment in transport and energy projects has increased in recent years. Kinshasa was founded as Léopoldville in 1881 during the colonial era and renamed following independence in 1966. Its strategic location and demographic weight make it a focal point for regional diplomacy, development finance and investment initiatives across the continent.
