Kimberley

Kimberley is the capital city of the Northern Cape province in South Africa. The city has a population of about 225 000 and serves as the administrative and economic centre of the province. Kimberley is historically renowned as the site of the world's largest hand-dug excavation, the Big Hole, which was created during the diamond rush of the late nineteenth century. The city's economy was traditionally dominated by diamond mining, with De Beers establishing its headquarters there in 1888. Today, Kimberley's economic base has diversified to include government services, retail, agriculture and tourism, though mining remains significant. The city is home to the McGregor Museum, the Kimberley Mine Museum and the William Humphreys Art Gallery, which attract visitors interested in the region's mining heritage. Kimberley is a transport hub with road and rail links to Johannesburg, Cape Town and Bloemfontein, and it hosts Kimberley Airport. The city has faced economic challenges in recent decades as mining activity has declined, prompting efforts to attract investment in renewable energy, agriculture and other sectors. Kimberley was founded in 1871 following the discovery of diamonds on the site and was named after the British Secretary of State for the Colonies, Lord Kimberley.
