Kampala
Kampala is the capital and largest city of Uganda, located in the central region of the country. The city serves as Uganda's political, economic and commercial hub, with a metropolitan population of several million people. Kampala sits on a series of hills near the northern shore of Lake Victoria, the largest lake in Africa. The city is the centre of Uganda's government administration, hosting the national parliament, State House and key ministries. Its economy is driven by services, trade, manufacturing and a growing technology sector, with the city serving as the primary gateway for business in Uganda and the wider East African region. Kampala is home to Entebbe International Airport, located about 40 kilometres south-west of the city centre, which connects Uganda to regional and international destinations. The city has experienced rapid urbanisation and population growth over recent decades, placing pressure on infrastructure and public services. Kampala plays a strategic role in regional health and humanitarian responses, particularly in relation to disease outbreaks in neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo. The city was established as the capital of the Buganda kingdom before becoming the capital of the British protectorate and, after independence in 1962, the capital of the Republic of Uganda.
