Gauteng
Gauteng is a province of South Africa and the country's economic heartland. Its capital is Johannesburg, which also serves as the provincial and national commercial hub. The province is the smallest by area but the most populous, home to more than 15-million people. Gauteng generates around a third of South Africa's gross domestic product, driven by finance, manufacturing, trade, transport and professional services. Major cities include Johannesburg, Pretoria (the national administrative capital), Ekurhuleni and the Vaal Triangle industrial complex. The province hosts the headquarters of most major South African corporations, the Johannesburg Stock Exchange and key infrastructure including OR Tambo International Airport. Mining historically underpinned the economy, particularly gold extraction on the Witwatersrand, though the sector's contribution has declined as services and manufacturing have grown. Gauteng's name derives from the Sotho word for "place of gold", reflecting its origins in the late-nineteenth-century gold rush. The province was established in 1994 from the former Pretoria-Witwatersrand-Vereeniging region.
