Gabon
Gabon is a country in Central Africa, located on the Atlantic coast and straddling the equator. The capital is Libreville, situated on the country's north-western coast. Gabon has a population of about 2.3-million and an economy heavily dependent on oil, which accounts for the majority of export revenues and government income. Other significant sectors include manganese mining, timber and forestry, with Gabon holding substantial tropical rainforest reserves. The currency is the Central African CFA franc, shared with five other members of the Economic and Monetary Community of Central Africa. Gabon is a presidential republic and has been governed by the Bongo family for most of its post-independence history, though a military coup in August 2023 ended the dynasty's rule. The country is a member of the Economic Community of Central African States, the African Union and OPEC. Gabon gained independence from France in 1960 and has maintained close political and economic ties with its former colonial power. Its relatively small population and significant natural resource wealth have historically given it one of the highest per capita incomes in sub-Saharan Africa, though income distribution remains uneven.
