Equatorial Guinea
Equatorial Guinea is a small Central African country comprising a mainland region, Río Muni, and several islands, most notably Bioko, where the capital Malabo is located. The country has a population of about 1.5-million and is one of sub-Saharan Africa's smallest nations by area. Equatorial Guinea is the only African country with Spanish as an official language, a legacy of colonial rule that ended in 1968. The economy is heavily dependent on oil and gas exports, which have made it one of the highest GDP-per-capita countries in Africa, though wealth distribution remains highly unequal. The country also produces timber, cocoa and coffee. The currency is the Central African CFA franc, shared with several other countries in the region. Equatorial Guinea is a member of the African Union, the Economic Community of Central African States and the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries. The government is a presidential republic, though it has been criticised internationally for authoritarian governance and human rights concerns. President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo has held power since 1979, making his tenure one of the longest in the world. The country shares land borders with Cameroon to the north and Gabon to the south and east.
