Egypt
Egypt is a transcontinental country located in North Africa and the Sinai Peninsula in Western Asia, with its capital in Cairo. It has a population of more than 100-million, making it the most populous country in the Arab world and the third most populous in Africa. Egypt's economy is diverse, encompassing agriculture, manufacturing, tourism, natural gas production and services, with the Suez Canal providing a critical source of foreign exchange as one of the world's most important maritime trade routes. The country's currency is the Egyptian pound, and its government operates as a semi-presidential republic. Key exports include natural gas, petroleum products, textiles, chemicals and agricultural goods such as citrus and cotton. Egypt has undertaken significant infrastructure projects in recent years, including the expansion of the Suez Canal and the construction of a new administrative capital east of Cairo. The country is a member of the African Union, the Arab League and the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa. Egypt plays a strategic role in regional geopolitics and has historically been a hub for labour migration, both as a source of workers moving to Gulf states and as a destination for migrants from sub-Saharan Africa. Economic challenges include high public debt, inflation and unemployment, prompting ongoing reform programmes supported by international financial institutions.
