Denel
Denel is a South African state-owned aerospace and defence technology conglomerate. Headquartered in Centurion, Gauteng, the company designs, manufactures and supports a range of defence and security products for domestic and international markets. Its core business lines include military aircraft, unmanned aerial systems, missiles, artillery systems, armoured vehicles and related technologies. Denel operates through several divisions and subsidiaries, including Denel Dynamics (missiles and precision-guided weapons), Denel Aeronautics (aircraft and aerostructures), Denel Vehicle Systems (armoured vehicles) and Denel Land Systems (artillery and infantry systems). The company has historically been a significant supplier to the South African National Defence Force and has exported products to customers across Africa, the Middle East and Asia. Denel has faced severe financial difficulties since the mid-2010s, marked by liquidity crises, governance challenges and allegations of corruption linked to state capture. The company has undergone restructuring efforts and workforce reductions as the South African government has sought to stabilise its finances and restore operational viability. Despite these challenges, Denel remains a strategic asset in South Africa's defence industrial base. The company was established in 1992 through the corporatisation of Armscor's manufacturing divisions following the end of apartheid and the transition to democratic governance.
