Deepening Democracy through Access to Information

Dar Es Salaam

Dar es Salaam is the largest city and former capital of Tanzania, located on the eastern coast along the Indian Ocean. Although the legislative capital was moved to Dodoma in 1974, Dar es Salaam remains the country's principal commercial centre, economic hub and most populous city, with a population exceeding six-million people in its metropolitan area. The city serves as Tanzania's main port and is the gateway for much of the country's international trade, handling the bulk of cargo for Tanzania and neighbouring landlocked countries including Zamala, Malawi, Burundi and eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. Its economy is driven by port operations, manufacturing, finance, telecommunications and a growing services sector, making it the financial and industrial heart of Tanzania. Dar es Salaam is home to the Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange and hosts the headquarters of numerous multinational corporations and regional offices. The city has seen significant infrastructure investment in recent years, including the Bus Rapid Transit system and expansion of digital infrastructure such as data centres. Its strategic coastal location and role as East Africa's second-largest port after Mombasa underpin its regional economic significance. The name Dar es Salaam means "Haven of Peace" in Arabic, reflecting its origins as a trading settlement established by Sultan Majid bin Said of Zanzibar in 1865.
