Burkina Faso
Burkina Faso is a landlocked country in West Africa bordered by Mali to the north and west, Niger to the east, Benin to the south-east, Togo and Ghana to the south, and Côte d'Ivoire to the south-west. The capital is Ouagadougou, which serves as the country's political and economic centre. The population is estimated at about 22-million people, with a predominantly agricultural economy based on cotton, gold mining and livestock. Burkina Faso is one of the world's leading cotton producers and has significant gold reserves, with mining contributing substantially to export revenues. The currency is the West African CFA franc, shared with seven other members of the West African Economic and Monetary Union. The country operates as a presidential republic, though it has experienced political instability including multiple coups, most recently in 2022. Burkina Faso is a member of the Economic Community of West African States and the African Union. The nation faces significant development challenges including poverty, food insecurity and security threats from jihadist insurgencies in the Sahel region. Since independence from France in 1960, Burkina Faso has navigated periods of authoritarian rule, democratic transition and ongoing efforts to stabilise governance and improve economic prospects.
