Britain
Britain, formally the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, is a sovereign country located off the north-western coast of continental Europe. The capital is London, one of the world's leading financial and cultural centres. The country comprises England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, with a combined population of about 67-million. Britain operates as a constitutional monarchy and parliamentary democracy, with the pound sterling as its currency. The economy is diversified, with strengths in financial services, pharmaceuticals, aerospace, automotive manufacturing, creative industries and professional services, making it one of the largest economies globally. Britain was a founding member of international institutions including the United Nations, NATO and the Commonwealth, and held membership of the European Union from 1973 until its formal exit in 2020. Historically, Britain was the centre of a vast colonial empire that at its height controlled territories across Africa, Asia, the Americas and Oceania, profoundly shaping global trade, governance and cultural patterns. In the African context, Britain colonised numerous territories including Zimbabwe (formerly Southern Rhodesia), South Africa, Kenya, Nigeria and Ghana, among others. Post-independence relations with former colonies remain significant through trade, development aid, diaspora communities and membership in the Commonwealth. Britain continues to wield considerable diplomatic, economic and cultural influence internationally, despite the contraction of its imperial reach over the twentieth century.
