BP is a British multinational oil and gas company headquartered in London, United Kingdom. The company operates across all areas of the oil and gas industry, including exploration and production, refining, distribution and marketing, petrochemicals, power generation and trading. BP is one of the world's largest energy companies and is vertically integrated, with operations spanning upstream oil and gas extraction through to downstream retail and commercial fuel sales. The company is listed on the London Stock Exchange and is a constituent of the FTSE 100 Index, with secondary listings on the New York Stock Exchange and other exchanges. BP operates in more than 70 countries worldwide and employs tens of thousands of people globally. The company's portfolio includes significant oil and gas assets in regions including the North Sea, the Gulf of Mexico, Angola, Azerbaijan, Trinidad and Tobago, and Australia. BP also markets fuels and lubricants through a global network of service stations and owns major refining and petrochemical facilities. In recent years the company has expanded into renewable energy, low-carbon power generation and electric vehicle charging infrastructure as part of its stated ambition to become a net-zero company by 2050. The company was founded in 1909 as the Anglo-Persian Oil Company, became the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company in 1935, and adopted the name British Petroleum in 1954 before rebranding to BP in 2000.
