Bangladesh
Bangladesh is a South Asian country bordered by India to the west, north and east, Myanmar to the south-east, and the Bay of Bengal to the south. The capital is Dhaka, a densely populated commercial and administrative centre. With a population exceeding 170 million, Bangladesh is one of the most densely populated countries in the world. The economy is driven by ready-made garments, textiles, agriculture, remittances and a growing services sector, with garments accounting for the bulk of export earnings. The currency is the taka. Bangladesh operates as a parliamentary republic under a Westminster-style system. The country is a member of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation, the Commonwealth, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation and the United Nations. Since independence in 1971, Bangladesh has transitioned from an agrarian economy to one increasingly focused on manufacturing and exports, though it remains vulnerable to climate change, particularly flooding and cyclones. The garment industry has positioned Bangladesh as a key supplier to global fashion brands, competing with Vietnam and other low-cost manufacturing hubs.
