Afghanistan
Afghanistan is a landlocked country in Central Asia, bordered by Pakistan to the east and south, Iran to the west, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan to the north, and China to the northeast. The capital is Kabul. The population is estimated at about 40-million people, comprising diverse ethnic groups including Pashtuns, Tajiks, Hazaras and Uzbeks. Afghanistan's economy is largely agricultural, with significant opium production, though the country also possesses mineral resources including copper, lithium and rare earths. The currency is the afghani. The country has experienced decades of conflict, including Soviet occupation in the 1980s, civil war, rule by the Taliban from 1996 to 2001, international military intervention following the September 2001 attacks, and the return of Taliban control in 2021. Afghanistan is a member of the United Nations and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation. The ongoing humanitarian and political situation has made Afghanistan a focus of international peacekeeping, reconstruction and development efforts. The country's instability has had regional and global implications for security, migration and narcotics trafficking. Afghanistan remains one of the world's least developed nations, with significant challenges in governance, infrastructure and human development.
