Abuja
Abuja is the capital city of Nigeria, located in the Federal Capital Territory in the centre of the country. It replaced Lagos as the national capital in 1991. The city was purpose-built as a planned capital, chosen for its central location and perceived neutrality among Nigeria's diverse ethnic and religious groups. Abuja has a population of several million people and serves as the administrative and political heart of Africa's most populous nation. The city hosts the presidential complex, National Assembly, Supreme Court and headquarters of numerous federal ministries and agencies. It is also home to foreign embassies and international organisations operating in Nigeria. Abuja's economy is driven primarily by government activity, but the city has developed into a significant hub for services, finance, telecommunications and technology. Major infrastructure includes Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, which connects the capital to domestic and international destinations. The city's master plan, designed by Japanese architect Kenzo Tange, features wide boulevards, distinct zones for residential, commercial and governmental functions, and notable landmarks such as the National Mosque and National Christian Centre. Abuja's strategic importance and modern infrastructure have made it a focal point for policy development, investment and regional diplomacy in West Africa.
