Abidjan
Abidjan is the economic capital and largest city of Côte d'Ivoire, located on the Gulf of Guinea coast in West Africa. Although Yamoussoukro is the official political capital, Abidjan remains the country's commercial, financial and industrial hub. The city has an estimated population of more than five-million people in its metropolitan area, making it one of the most populous urban centres in francophone Africa. Abidjan is home to the country's main port, the Port of Abidjan, which handles the majority of Côte d'Ivoire's international trade and serves as a key gateway for landlocked neighbours including Burkina Faso and Mali. The city's economy is driven by manufacturing, services, banking, telecommunications and logistics, with significant activity in cocoa processing, oil refining and light industry. Abidjan hosts the headquarters of numerous multinational corporations, regional offices of international organisations and the Abidjan Stock Exchange. Its infrastructure includes an international airport, an extensive road network and a developing public transport system. The city is divided into several communes spread across a lagoon system, connected by bridges including the landmark Houphouët-Boigny Bridge. Abidjan's strategic location, port facilities and concentration of skilled labour make it a focal point for foreign investment and regional trade in West Africa.
