Three partners at Baker McKenzie in Johannesburg have been named as Leading Lawyers and a further three have been ranked Next Generation lawyers, according to the Legal 500 Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) Guide, released this week.

Wildu du Plessis (Banking & Finance), Nick Altini (Competition) and Kieran Whyte (Projects and Infrastructure) were ranked as Leading Lawyers in the Guide; and Bridgett Majola (Banking & Finance), Lerisha Naidu (Competition) and Seraj Haroun (Corporate) were all listed as the next generation of lawyers to watch in the EMEA jurisdiction.  Nine of the firm’s practice areas were ranked in the Guide, including tier 2 rankings for its Banking and Finance, Corporate and Commercial/M&A, Competition and Projects and Infrastructure practices. The firm’s Construction, Dispute Resolution, Employment, Mining and Tax practices were also ranked in the Guide.
The EMEA Guide provides researched coverage of 81 countries and over 2,700 ranked law firms. The research is conducted annually, providing a detailed qualitative assessment of various factors including work conducted by law firms over the past 12 months and historically; experience and depth of teams; specialisms and ancillary services; and the opinions of law firms’ clients.
Managing Partner of Baker McKenzie in Johannesburg, Morne van der Merwe says, “Our aim is to be the go-to international firm in the African market, assisting our clients in the complex matters they are facing in Africa. These rankings and the endorsements from our clients affirm that we are succeeding in doing that. In Africa, the combination of our local knowledge and global reach is especially important given the current uncertain deal making and business environment. Our partnership with our clients and ability to understand the challenges they face, is paramount.
Last month, seven lawyers from Baker McKenzie South Africa and 13 of its practice areas were recognised by in the 2018 Chambers Global Guide.
