As the South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SACCI), we offer our condolences to the family of the late Dr Richard Maponya, the business community at large and South Africa in general.

There can never be  enough words to pay tribute to this legend, who against the most difficult challenges and odds, rose to be a shining beacon of light for black business in the apartheid days, and continued to make a massive contribution to the broader business community in post-apartheid SA.

Dr Richard Maponya was not only an activist, but a visionary and innovative leader in business and SA society in general. His achievements are incomparable, given the huge obstacles he had to overcome and endure in building his business dynasty.

Dr Maponya was a first amongst equals. It is said that a thermometer measures the temperature, and a thermostat, creates the temperature. Dr Richard Maponya was a thermostat who lit up the business scene for decades with his infectious personality, diligence and brilliance.

We salute and honour this pioneering son of Africa who led from the front with his can-do attitude and execution mentality.

We expect the legacy of Dr. Maponya to continue to inspire current and future generations of entrepreneurs to strive for innovative excellence and ethical conduct in building a prosperous and inclusive economy.

May his soul rest in peace.
