The Portfolio Committee on Correctional Services intends visiting the Groenpunt Maximum Security Correctional Centre following the riot that took place there earlier this week.

Committee Chairperson, Mr Vincent Smith, says the Committee will visit the centre to assess measures put in place to defuse the situation, and to address all shortcomings that had led to the riot. The Committee cannot condone, for whatever the reasons, the placing at risk of the lives of inmates and correctional officials, or the destruction of state property.

The Committee will await the outcome of investigation underway. The Committee has urged the Department of Correctional Services to address the circumstances that had led to the inmate uprising.
