Mpumalanga is on course to stemming any incident of financial system fraud and corruption. This is according to the MEC for Finance, Mr Madala Masuku who, on Thursday, 23 May 2013 tabled his department’s policy and budget for 2013/14 at the Provincial Legislature.

MEC Masuku said his department is in the process of enhancing province’s fraud detection system in order to protect business and government from any unbecoming business practice.

“We will introduce fraud and banking system as part of the programme to improve the integrity of our financial management system.

“The system will assist in ensuring that payments are done to the right person and service provider, by eliminating the opportunity for fraud and corruption in financial transactions,” said MEC Masuku.

The provincial government is determined to fight crime and corruption hence these featured prominently in the State of the Province Address and Provincial Budget speech for 2013 that Premier David Mabuza and MEC delivered respectively in March this year.

The Department of Finance has also issued fraud risk assessment guidelines and assisted departments to intervene timeously to deal with any case of fraud in the system.

The total budget allocated to the Department of Finance for this financial year is R266 million. The budget allocation is tilted toward funding strategic support programmes; enhancing capacity of the officials in departments, public entities and municipalities and ensuring effective monitoring of implementation of financial policies and regulations in the Province.
