Over 4500 fines issued to traffic violations over the past weekend in Mpumalanga

As part of improving road safety and reducing crime in Mpumalanga, Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison traffic officers issued at least 4516 fines for various traffic offences over the weekend during various operations that took place across the province.

The operations are part of the department’s traffic law enforcement activities. Roadblocks and rest stops are staged in different routes of the province and are expected to continue throughout the year as a means of reducing road carnage and improving road safety in the province.

During the operations 269 vehicles were also impounded while 147 were discontinued as they were not road worthy. From these figures there were 19 mini buses that were discontinued from being on the road. The operations also saw eleven motorists being arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.

Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Vusi Shongwe applauded traffic officials and the police for the role that they continue to play in ensuring that crime is prevented and the roads are safer.

He calls on community members not to turn a blind eye when they experience reckless driving or are witnessing crime in their areas.

“We need to work harder to eliminate unnecessary lawlessness on our roads as this will enhance road safety in the province. We will continue with our fight against bad driver behaviour and non-compliance with traffic regulations so that our roads become free of unnecessary accidents.

We cannot succeed on our own; we need communities to work with us by among others reporting crime, bad driving and spread road safety messages.

“Road users are warned to obey traffic regulations on our roads to ensure that there is a reduction of accidents in the province,” Shongwe concluded.
