The application for an eviction order by civil rights organisation AfriForum in the North Gauteng High Court has been postponed today to give the Matlosana Municipality time to provide alternative accommodation for the 1 000 illegal occupiers in Klerksdorp.
“The Municipality has 21 days to find alternative housing for the illegal occupiers and has to inform the legal team of AfriForum in writing when the occupiers can be evicted and moved,” said Ian Cameron, Organiser for AfriForum in the North West.
On 17 April 2013 AfriForum was granted an application by the same court to have the illegal squatters investigated by the South African Police Service. This order was directed to National Police Commissioner, Riah Phiyega, as well as the station commander of Klerksdorp. This after several complaints had been received from the community regarding the rapid escalation of crime since the squatters settled in Meiringspark. A vicious attack on a man who lives near the informal settlement has, among others, been reported.
“The order against the Municipality brings us closer to the eventual eviction,” Cameron added.
It is important for the public to become involved in the public debate, and AfriForum encourages people to join them as a civil rights organisation that fights for better services across the country. People may SMS the name of their town to 31488 to become a member. SMSs cost 50c.
