The IFP has lambasted the Greater Kei Municipality for its failure to
maintain roads in Zozo Location, near East London, which for over two years
have remained in a state of total disrepair. The situation is so desperate
that residents have now taken to effecting road repairs themselves.

IFP Spokesperson on Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Mr
Peter Smith, MP said, "It is sad to learn that the elderly have now had to
take matters into their own hands due to the Greater Kei municipality
failing them. It is shameful that our senior citizens are so desperate to
get things fixed that they put themselves in harm's way in order to do the
municipality's job. This is an unacceptable situation."

Desperate residents resorted to using stones and hard soil to cover up the
cracks as taxis and ambulance drivers have stated they are unwilling to
drive on these damaged roads, especially when it rains. Residents would then
be required to walk 5 km just to catch a taxi.

"The municipality's claim that its grader had broken down is an unacceptable
excuse for not fixing the roads. This blatant disregard by municipality of
its duties shows a dire lack of concern for the residents and one can only
wonder what other services have been neglected," said Smith.

The IFP calls upon the Mayor of Greater Kei Municipality, Councillor NW
Tekile to ensure that these roads are repaired as soon as possible.
Municipalities such as this one which fail to deliver services to the people
must be held accountable for their negligence.
