The IFP calls on the Department of Health to monitor the circumcision
process in initiations schools, so as to avoid further deaths. IFP
Spokesperson on Health, Mrs Hilda Msweli (MP) said, "Cooperation between the
Department of Health and the Traditional leaders is needed, and it will
decrease the high number of deaths. Doctors should be involved in the
process, to make sure that any initiate who needs urgent medical assistance
receives it quickly. Some initiates died from complications due to the
severe loss of blood, which could have been avoided."
Msweli added, "it is imperative that legitimate and safe initiation schools
must be identified and supported by the health department. Any schools found
to be negligent must be shut down and those who run them must be arrested.
Parents must know that the schools are safe and that no mistreatment will
take place. The deaths of the 23 initiates in Mpumalanga could have been
avoided if safety measures were in place."
