The IFP welcomes the new daily wage increase for farm workers which has been
increased to R105,00 per day.
IFP Spokesperson on Labour, Mr. Albert Mncwango, MP said, "We are pleased
that a solution has finally been found to this intractable matter to end the
strike that was threatening not only human life but the dreadful collapse of
the farming industry in the country generally and in the Western Cape in
particular. We hope that this minimum wage increase will not lead to farmers
retrenching workers by claiming they cannot afford it. We encourage farmers
who are struggling financially to meet this new wage increase to apply for
exemption which is provided for in the new wage dispensation rather than opt
for retrenchment."
The IFP further urges the Department of Labour, Agri-SA and Organized Labour
to continue to engage in order to find an amicable solution to the
challenges around the working conditions of farm workers. It is not
acceptable that farm workers continue to work under the current poor working
conditions.
