The IFP condemns the firing of the 108 Sanicare employees who embarked on an
unprotected strike two months ago with regards to desiring a salary
increase. The strike resulted in Gugulethu informal settlement residents
emptying their buckets on the N2 highway, causing major traffic yesterday.
"The IFP wonders whether Sanicare CC followed labour law procedures in
firing these employees. Firing the employees and bringing in new staff is
not the solution - instead it will put the lives of the new staff at risk,
as some city employees were attacked while providing interim services in an
area where workers of Sanicare were on strike."
The IFP condemns any unfair dismissal of employees, yet does not encourage
any form of unprotected strike that results in major disruptions and damage
to property
